When it comes to Barrett’s esophagus, one of the primary goals of treatment is to prevent or slow the development of the condition. Treatment options include minimally invasive techniques and surgery, while some doctors choose endoscopic surveillance to monitor the progression to cancer. Many recent studies have recognize radiofrequency ablation as an effective form of treatment for Barrett’s esophagus.

In recent data, from a U.K. National Halo RFA Registry, revealed that 86% of their Barrett’s esophagus patients achieved complete remission of high-grade dysplasia after radiofrequency ablation, with only 9% reporting adverse events.

What Does the Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) Data Show?

Dr. Haidry and his colleagues of the National Medical Laser Centre at University College London, analyzed data from the U.K. National Halo RFA Registry, founded in 2008 to audit outcomes of all patients undergoing ablation using the Halo device for high-grade dysplasia and early cancer in Barrett’s esophagus.

The data included 335 patients (mean age, 68.1 years); 81% were men and 100% were white. About half the patients (49%) underwent endoscopic resection before starting RFA.

They found that at 1-year post RFA, 86% of patients had achieved complete reversal of high-grade dysplasia, and 81% showed complete reversal of all dysplasia. Although there were 12 cases of recurrent neoplasia within a mean of 8 months after ablation, the majority of patients were in full remission; thus recognizing RFA as an effective treatment for Barrett’s esophagus.

Long-Term Effectiveness of RFA

While the study involved a median follow-up time of 19 months, additional long-term follow-ups are important.

To support the long-term efficacy of RFA, a recent Dutch study conducted by Dr. Phoa and her colleagues at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, showed that at 5 years after radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s esophagus, 93% of patients remained in complete, sustained remission. The study published in April of this year, further supports the likely success of radiofrequency ablation when treating Barrett’s disease, in many patients.
